Setting Up Kaspa NG Wallet

Kaspa NG is the official modern wallet for Kaspa and the recommended choice for most users. This step-by-step guide will walk you through setting up Kaspa NG in both desktop and web modes, ensuring you secure your wallet properly from the start.

1.

Choosing Between Desktop and Web Mode

Kaspa NG can run in two modes: as a desktop application you install on your computer, or as a web application that runs in your browser. Kaspa NG is a comprehensive application that integrates a full Kaspa node, wallet, BlockDAG visualizer, and CLI tools. Both desktop and web modes have the same core functionality, but they differ in important ways regarding security and convenience.

Desktop Mode (Recommended)

The desktop version of Kaspa NG is an application you download and install on your computer, similar to any other software application. This version offers better security than the web version because your wallet data is stored locally on your computer rather than in your browser’s storage.

When you use the desktop version, your wallet data is stored in files on your computer. While these files are encrypted and protected by your password, you have more control over where they’re stored and how they’re backed up. The desktop version also works better offline-you can view your balance and addresses even when you’re not connected to the internet.

The desktop version is recommended for anyone who wants better security and doesn’t mind installing software. It’s available for Windows, macOS, and Linux, so it works on virtually any computer.

Web Mode (Convenient but Less Secure)

The web version of Kaspa NG runs entirely in your browser-you don’t need to install anything. You just visit the website and use the wallet directly. This is very convenient if you want to access your wallet from multiple devices or don’t want to install software.

Important Security Consideration

The web version has an important security consideration: it stores your wallet keys in your browser’s local storage. This means if you clear your browser data, uninstall the browser, or lose access to your device, you’ll lose access to your wallet unless you have your seed phrase backed up. Additionally, browser storage can be more vulnerable to certain types of attacks compared to dedicated desktop software.

The web version is fine for small amounts and convenience, but you must be extra careful to back up your seed phrase immediately. Many users who have lost access to web wallets did so because they didn’t properly back up their seed phrase before something happened to their browser data.

Setting Up Kaspa NG Desktop

Follow these steps to set up Kaspa NG on your desktop computer:

Step 1: Download the Application

Visit the official Kaspa NG website at kaspa-ng.org or download directly from the GitHub Releases page to get the latest version for your operating system. Make sure you’re downloading from the official website or GitHub repository and verify that the URL is correct. Scammers sometimes create fake websites that look similar, so double-check the domain name.

Official Website: kaspa-ng.org
GitHub Releases: github.com/aspectron/kaspa-ng/releases

Kaspa NG is available for Windows, macOS, and Linux. Download the appropriate version for your operating system from the releases page.

Step 2: Install the Application

Installation steps vary by operating system:

Windows: Extract the downloaded ZIP file, navigate to the extracted directory, and double-click kaspa-ng.exe to start the application.

macOS: Extract the downloaded ZIP file, navigate to the extracted directory, and double-click the kaspa-ng file to start the application. You may need to allow the application to run in your security settings.

Linux: Extract the downloaded archive, open a terminal, navigate to the extracted directory, and run ./kaspa-ng to start the application. You may need to make it executable with chmod +x kaspa-ng.

Step 3: Create Your New Wallet

When you first launch Kaspa NG, you’ll see options to create a new wallet or import an existing one. Since this is your first wallet, choose “Create New Wallet” and follow these steps:

  1. Specify a wallet name to identify this wallet
  2. Choose the length of your seed phrase (12 or 24 words)
  3. We recommend 24 words for the best security and compatibility
  4. The wallet supports standard BIP32 (HD) accounts compatible with the Kaspa ecosystem

Step 4: Write Down Your Seed Phrase

Most Critical Step

This is the most critical step. The application will display your seed phrase-a list of words that can recreate your entire wallet. Before you click “Continue” or do anything else, get a pen and paper ready. Write down each word exactly as shown, in the exact order displayed. Check your spelling carefully, as even one wrong letter makes the phrase useless.

Write clearly and legibly. This piece of paper will be critical if you ever need to recover your wallet. Double-check that you wrote all the words correctly before proceeding. Some users write it twice on separate pieces of paper to ensure accuracy.

Never Store Digitally

Never take a screenshot of your seed phrase. Never store it in cloud storage, email, or notes apps. Write it only on physical paper and store it securely. See our guide on securing your seed phrase for detailed recommendations.

Step 5: Verify Your Seed Phrase

The application will ask you to verify your seed phrase by entering some of the words back. This step ensures you wrote it down correctly. Take your time and be careful-this verification step is designed to catch mistakes before it’s too late.

Step 6: Set a Strong Password

While setting a password is optional, we strongly recommend it. This password encrypts your wallet file on your computer, adding an extra layer of protection. Choose a strong, unique password that you’ll remember. However, remember that this password only protects the wallet file-it doesn’t protect your seed phrase, which needs separate secure storage.

Step 7: Synchronize with the Network

Kaspa NG includes a built-in full node. When you first launch the application, it will begin synchronizing with the Kaspa network. This process may take some time depending on your internet connection and system performance. You can use the wallet features while synchronization is in progress, but full functionality requires the node to be synchronized.

You can monitor the synchronization progress in the application interface. Once synchronized, you’ll have access to the full BlockDAG visualizer and other advanced features.

Step 8: Your Wallet Is Ready

Congratulations! Your wallet is now set up. You’ll see your wallet address, which you can share with others to receive KAS. Take some time to familiarize yourself with the interface. You can:

  • Generate multiple addresses if needed
  • View your transaction history once you receive some KAS
  • Explore the BlockDAG visualizer to see the Kaspa network in action
  • Use the built-in CLI tools for advanced operations

3.

Setting Up Kaspa NG Web Mode

If you prefer to use the web version, follow these steps:

Step 1: Visit the Website

Go to kaspa-ng.org in your web browser. Make sure you’re on the official website-double-check the URL to avoid phishing sites.

Step 2: Create Your Wallet

Click on the option to create a new wallet. The web interface will guide you through the setup process, which is very similar to the desktop version.

Step 3: Create or Import Your Wallet

You can choose to create a new wallet or import an existing one:

To create a new wallet:

  1. Specify a wallet name
  2. Securely write down the recovery phrase provided (supports 12 or 24-word mnemonics)
  3. Set a strong password for the wallet

To import an existing wallet:

  1. Select the type of private key (12-word mnemonic, 24-word mnemonic, or other supported formats)
  2. Enter your recovery phrase
  3. Enter any associated passphrase if applicable
  4. Kaspa NG supports the default BIP-44 derivation path when importing

Critical: Immediate Backup Required

Unlike desktop wallets, web wallets store your keys in browser storage, which can be lost if you clear your browser data, uninstall the browser, or lose access to your device. You must write down your seed phrase immediately before doing anything else. Don’t wait, don’t skip this step, and don’t assume you’ll do it later.

Follow the same seed phrase backup process as described in the desktop setup above. Write it on paper, verify it carefully, and store it securely.

Step 4: Access Your Wallet

Once set up, you can access your wallet by visiting the website and entering your password (if you set one). Remember that your seed phrase is your ultimate backup-if you lose access to the web wallet, you can restore your wallet using your seed phrase in any Kaspa wallet software.

4.

Next Steps

Now that your Kaspa NG wallet is set up:

  • Your seed phrase is written down and stored securely
  • You know how to receive KAS (share your address)
  • You understand how to send KAS (use the Send function)
  • You've verified your seed phrase backup is correct
